Amelia Island is the northern tip of Florida, which means real seasons: a winter you'll want a hoodie for, a summer that's hot and stormy in the afternoons, and two long, perfect shoulder seasons in between. Here's what the numbers say (NOAA's 1991–2020 averages for Fernandina Beach) and what we'd do each month.

The seasons, plainly
November through April: bonfire season. Cool evenings, dark beaches and the county's fire window. This is when we set up beach bonfires and when the island is at its most relaxed. Days are mild enough for a ride to Fort Clinch without breaking a sweat; nights want a sweatshirt. The water is cold for swimming (low 60s by January), so this is bike-and-beach-walk season, not swim season.
May through October: swim season. The ocean climbs into the 80s by July, the body boards and paddle boards come out, and the beach gets busy. It's also sea turtle season, so fires are off and chairs come in at night. Summer afternoons bring a short thunderstorm most days; ride in the morning, swim midday, and plan the chair set-up for the early part of the day. On the hottest days an e-bike is the difference between a fun ride and a chore.
April and October are the sweet spots. Warm, dry, uncrowded, and in April you can still have a bonfire. If you can pick your week, pick one of these.
Hurricanes, honestly
Hurricane season is June through November, with the real risk in August, September and early October. Amelia Island is tucked into the corner where Florida meets Georgia, and direct hits are rare, but a storm passing offshore means a few days of wind, surf and closed beaches. Travel insurance in September is money well spent. If a storm affects your rental, call us; we work with you.
Events worth planning around
The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival downtown, the first weekend in May, is the island's biggest weekend; book early and ride a bike, because parking is hopeless. The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance car show in March fills the Ritz and the Plantation. The Dickens on Centre festival in December turns downtown Victorian. Any of those weekends, reserve bikes ahead; walk-ins run out.
