Amelia Island is 13 miles long, mostly flat, and you can ride almost all of it without touching a highway. These five rides all start at our store at the Sadler Road roundabout, across from Seaside Park, and they range from an easy hour to a full afternoon. Distances are round trips and approximate.
1. Fort Clinch State Park, about 12 miles
The classic. Ride north on Fletcher Avenue with the ocean on your right, through Main Beach, then into the park on Atlantic Avenue. Inside the gate, a canopy road winds three miles under live oaks to the 1847 brick fort at the north tip of the island. Walk the ramparts, watch the shrimp boats in the channel, and ride back the same way. Flat the whole way. Park entry is $2 per bike at the gate, which might be the best two dollars you spend all week. On a hot day this is the ride to do on an e-bike.
2. Historic downtown and Centre Street, about 7 miles
Head north on Fletcher, turn left on Atlantic, and you're on Centre Street in about three miles: brick storefronts, the Palace Saloon, ice cream, and the marina at the end of the street. Lock the bike (every rental comes with a lock) and walk. For food, our regulars' picks are Mezcal for tacos, The Patio on 5th for a sit-down lunch, the Salty Pelican for a drink with a view of the river, and Townies Pizza when you've got kids along. Come back the same way or loop south on 14th Street for a change of scenery. This is the ride that replaces a car for dinner.
3. Egan's Creek Greenway, about 6 miles
Two minutes from the store is a 300-acre marsh with grass trails, boardwalks and more wildlife than you'd expect: wading birds, turtles, the occasional gator at a polite distance. It's unpaved but packed, fine for a cruiser, and shaded. The closest way in is the entrance behind the Marriott, just up from our door; you can also enter from Jasmine Street or Atlantic Avenue near the rec center. Open sunrise to sundown, no motorized anything, so e-bikes stay outside.
4. The Amelia Island Trail to Big Talbot, about 20 miles
For a real ride. Go south on Fletcher, then A1A, to Peters Point Beachfront Park, where the paved Amelia Island Trail starts. It runs 8.7 miles along A1A through Amelia Island State Park to the bridge at the south end, where it links to the Timucuan Trail on Big Talbot Island and the boneyard beach. Bring water. The second half is where the 60-mile range on our e-bikes earns its keep.
5. The beach itself, as far as you like
Cross Fletcher from the store, roll down the walkover, and ride on the sand. An hour or two either side of low tide the sand near the water is hard-packed and fast, and you can go for miles with nothing but surf on one side. Here's how to do it well. Regular cruisers only; e-bikes stay on the road.
Before you go
Every bike from us comes with a helmet, a lock and a storage bag. Riders under 16 must wear a helmet under Florida law, and we have kids' sizes. Walk in and ride out, or reserve a bike online. Same price delivered to your rental.
Quick answers
Is Amelia Island good for biking?
Yes. It's flat, there are bike lanes or a wide shoulder on most of Fletcher and A1A, the Amelia Island Trail is fully paved, and you can ride on the beach at low tide. A beginner can do any ride on this list.
How long does it take to bike to Fort Clinch from Fernandina Beach?
About 45 minutes to an hour each way from our store on a single-speed cruiser, less on an e-bike. Park entry is $2 per bike. Add time inside the park for the fort itself.
Do I need to reserve a bike?
No. Walk in any day from 9 to 7 and ride out. Reserve online if you want a specific size held, or if you want it delivered to your rental.
Where can I park a bike downtown?
Racks along Centre Street and at the marina. Every bike we rent comes with a lock.
