Can you ride a bike on the beach at Amelia Island? Yes. Here’s how.

One of the few places in Florida where you can. Tide timing, where the sand is hard, and what to ride.

Yes. Amelia Island is one of the few beaches in Florida where riding a bike on the sand is normal, and it's the best ride on the island. No cars, no stoplights, the ocean a few feet away. It just takes a little timing.

Time it with the tide

The sand near the water is hard-packed and fast for about two hours either side of low tide. At high tide the firm strip disappears and you'll be pushing through soft sand, which is no fun on any bike. Check a tide chart for Fernandina Beach the night before and plan your ride around the low. Morning lows are the best of all: cool, empty, and the sand freshly smoothed by the outgoing water.

Where to ride

From our store, cross Fletcher Avenue to Seaside Park and take the walkover down. Turn north and you can ride past Main Beach toward Fort Clinch, or turn south toward Peters Point. Stay on the wet, firm sand below the high-tide line. The dry sand and the dunes are off limits: soft to ride on, and the sea oats that hold the dunes together are protected.

What bike to use

A beach cruiser with wide tires. That's what ours are, and it's the only kind we'll send onto the sand. E-bikes stay on the roads and trails: salt and sand are hard on motors and batteries, and the extra weight sinks in the soft spots.

The rules

  • Give walkers, kids and dogs the right of way. Ring the bell early and pass wide.
  • No riding on the dunes or through the sea oats, ever.
  • From May through October, sea turtles nest on the beach. Steer well clear of any marked nests.
  • Glass and alcohol aren't allowed on the beach, and dogs must be leashed.

Afterward

Salt water and sand are rough on a chain. Bring the bike back to the store, park it in the rack and we'll rinse it at the hose, or rinse it yourself at your rental if you're keeping it a few days. Every cruiser we rent comes with a helmet, a lock and a bag, and kids' helmets are free. Walk in and ride out any day from 9 to 7, or reserve online.

Quick answers

Is it legal to bike on the beach at Fernandina Beach?

Yes, bicycles are a normal sight on the sand here. The rules that do apply are the general beach rules: stay off the dunes, give pedestrians the right of way, and keep clear of marked turtle nests in season.

What tide is best for biking on the beach?

Low tide, and about two hours either side of it. The firmest sand is just above the water line. At high tide the firm strip is underwater and the rest is soft.

Can I take an e-bike on the beach?

Not ours. Salt and sand are hard on motors and batteries, and the extra weight sinks in soft spots. Cruisers only on the sand; e-bikes on the road and trails.

How far can I ride on the beach?

At a good low tide you can ride from Seaside Park north to Fort Clinch or south toward Peters Point with few interruptions, roughly 4 to 5 miles each way.
